Family
The Bible uses many word pictures to described the church: a building God is constructing, a field He is causing to grow, a flock He's caring for, an army He's leading, a bride He loves, and many more. Possibly the most significant, and easiest to relate to, is that of a family. In fact, this one is more than just a word picture, it's actually what we are. Those of us who have placed our trust in Jesus have literally been adopted into God's family and we are brothers and sisters of each other. This is true of all Christians around the world, regardless of what church we attend or what culture we're a part of. It is seen most clearly, however, and experienced most wonderfully, in a local church.
At Atascadero Gospel Chapel, the idea of being family is something we are very committed to and put a high value on. Family members rejoice together in good times and are there for each other in tough times. They watch out for each other, learn from each other, have fun together, and are willing to sacrifice for each other. A church family is more than just a group of people who meet in the same building once a week; they do life together.
Is being a family always easy? Does it mean we never have any disagreements or rub each other the wrong way? (What family did you come from?) What it does mean is that we accept and value each other for who we are. We're free to struggle and to grow together. We'll work through whatever life throws at us together.
What creates this bond between us? It's the fact that that God Himself accepts and loves each of us and has adopted us into His family. The more we focus on the greatness of our Heavenly Father's love and power, the smaller the differences in our personalities, backgrounds, and opinions get. As we receive His care, comfort, and encouragement in our own lives, weβre able to pass it on to others.
As the old song says, "I'm so glad I'm a part of the family of God!"
